What to do and see in Civitavecchia?Mini guide to discover the town
Civitavecchia is a town rich in monuments and archaeological sites that testify the historical presence of different eras and civilizations. Developed by an Etruscan settlement, the town then assumed a strategic role in Roman times, thanks also to its proximity to Rome and to the emperor Trajan, founder of the harbour.
In the Middle Ages, the different Popes who succeeded greatly contributed to the city by commissioning the construction of monuments and historic buildings, that can still be admired. Many of this are enclosed within the Historic Harbour, built by order of Emperor Trajan between 103 and 110 AD.
The Michelangelo Fort (or Giulia Fortress) symbol of the city, is one of the most important architectural structures of the Lazio coast that Pope Julius II commissioned to Bramante to defend the harbour from pirate raids. According to many sources, the construction of the highest tower, the so-called Maschio (male), was entrusted to Michelangelo Buonarroti, from which he then took the name.
Not far from the Fort there is the long Muraglione di Urbano VIII, a majestic brickwork, in which in the past the ancient Roman warehouses were housed. But the historic port does not end here! Just remember the beautiful Fountain of Vanvitelli, Porta Livorno, the Ancient Rocca, the Roman Dock and the Molo del Lazzaretto to understand the importance and beauty of this place.
Civitavecchia, moreover, with its mild climate, the beautiful seafront of the Marina, archaeological sites of great importance as the Terme Taurine, and a well-preserved medieval historical center is today a town able to offer a lot to the tourist who reaches it.
